SUMMARY:[UPDATED] Animals in Literature and Visual Art
DESCRIPTION:In March\, we’ll explore a BBC Reader centered on visual art and short literary segments created across time and place by artists and authors who portray animals in their work to raise environmental and ethical questions related to animal rights. \nAlongside a range of visual artworks\, we’ll read excerpts from older texts\, including The Animal’s Lawsuit Against Humanity\, a 10th-century Muslim Sufi work from Iraq\, as well as short selections from a long poem written just over 1\,000 years ago by the Syrian philosopher Abu al-Ala al-Maʿarri\, often cited as the earliest known explicitly vegan text. \nBBC members are warmly invited to send further suggestions for this session to Sharon at sharon@oddmaninn.org.

SUMMARY:Photography as Advocacy Part II
DESCRIPTION:We had such a good discussion as we analyzed the wildlife photographs in our Fall 2025 Book Club session on “Photography as Advocacy” that we didn’t have time to look at sanctuary photography in the same detail. \nFor the January BBC\, we will take a close look at sanctuary photographs\, including a selection from OMI\, and we’ll talk about aspects of photography that are especially important for representing our residents and the realities of sanctuary work to the public. Photography is a visual language\, and we’ll talk about how it works to communicate meaning across a range of advocacy platforms.

SUMMARY:Remembering Jane Goodall: Staying in It for the Long Haul
DESCRIPTION:We want to devote our November Bite-Size Book Club session to discussing the work and legacy of Jane Goodall\, who died on October 1st at the age of 91. She was a lifelong advocate for animals and animal rights\, and a naturalist and researcher whose observations of chimpanzees in the wild broke important ground in deepening our collective understanding of animal behavior and capacities. For decades\, she traveled worldwide in support of scientific research\, educational projects for young people\, protection of the natural world\, and animal rights advocacy. \nWe will talk about the just-released Netflix documentary Famous Last Words: Jane Goodall\, an interview with Goodall recorded with the understanding that it would only be released after her death. Our reading for November will be an excerpt from her last book\, The Book of Hope: A Survival Guide for Trying Times\, in which she draws an interesting contrast between “hope” and “optimism.”

SUMMARY:Fall Series (Ep 2): The Power of Photography
DESCRIPTION:Photography has long served as a bridge between worlds\, revealing hidden realities\, creating empathy\, and inspiring action. In sanctuary and animal rights work\, photographers face unique challenges: How do you capture the essence of an animal’s story while respecting their autonomy? How do you create images that advocate without exploiting? \nWhat to Expect\nWe’ll examine how photographers have used their lens to transform public perception of sanctuary work\, and animals in general. Central questions will include: How does photography bridge the gap between human and animal experience? What makes an image advocacy rather than mere documentation? How do sanctuary photographers balance the dignity of their animal subjects with the need to tell compelling stories that drive change? \nWe’ll explore the ethical considerations photographers face when documenting animal lives\, the techniques that might create emotional connection without exploitation\, and how visual storytelling can shift hearts and minds in ways that words alone cannot. \nThe format is discussion-driven\, so we’ll follow the conversation wherever it leads us\, with plenty of space for your insights about the images and concepts we explore together. \nHow to Prepare\n\nRegister for the event\nWatch for an email with the meeting link\, and add the event to your calendar\nCome ready to engage in thoughtful discussion about photography\, storytelling\, and animal advocacy\n\nJoin the Full Series\nWe encourage you to participate in our complete Art as Advocacy series! Continuity and group familiarity lead to richer discussions as we build on shared insights and develop deeper understanding together. Each session builds naturally on the previous ones\, creating a more rewarding experience for everyone involved.

SUMMARY:Fall Series (Ep 1): THING - Inside the Struggle for Animal Personhood
DESCRIPTION:Book Selection\nWe’ll be discussing selected pages from “Thing: Inside the Struggle for Animal Personhood” by Samuel Machado and Cynthia Sousa Machado\, with Steven M. Wise. \nReading Assignment\nDon’t worry about reading the entire book\, we’ll provide key selections that frame our discussion. A short PDF will be provided via email after registration. While we’ll provide the selected readings via email\, we encourage you to explore the entire book from your local library! \nWhat to Expect\nWe’ll dive into the powerful intersection of art and advocacy by exploring how graphic novels can communicate complex legal and ethical concepts. Central to our discussion will be Happy’s story – an elephant at the Bronx Zoo whose case challenges us to consider: What does it mean to legally acknowledge the personhood of nonhuman animals? How might applying legal concepts like Habeas Corpus to someone like Happy transform our understanding of animal rights? \nWe’ll also examine how the graphic novel format itself serves as a vehicle for advocacy\, discussing how visual storytelling can make abstract legal concepts accessible and emotionally resonant. \nThe format is discussion-driven\, so we’ll follow the conversation wherever it leads us\, with plenty of space for your insights and reflections on both the content and the medium. \nHow to Prepare\n\nRegister for the event\, and add it to your calendar\nWatch for an email with reading selections and the meeting link\nRead the assigned excerpts before the meeting\nCome ready to engage in a discussion about art\, advocacy\, and animal personhood\n\nJoin the Full Series\nWe encourage you to participate in our complete Fall 2025: Art as Advocacy series! Continuity and group familiarity lead to richer discussions as we build on shared insights and develop deeper understanding together. We hope that each session builds naturally on the previous ones\, creating a more rewarding experience for everyone involved.
