SUMMARY:Remembering Jane Goodall: Staying in It for the Long Haul
DESCRIPTION:We want to devote our November Bite-Size Book Club session to discussing the work and legacy of Jane Goodall\, who died on October 1st at the age of 91. She was a lifelong advocate for animals and animal rights\, and a naturalist and researcher whose observations of chimpanzees in the wild broke important ground in deepening our collective understanding of animal behavior and capacities. For decades\, she traveled worldwide in support of scientific research\, educational projects for young people\, protection of the natural world\, and animal rights advocacy. \nWe will talk about the just-released Netflix documentary Famous Last Words: Jane Goodall\, an interview with Goodall recorded with the understanding that it would only be released after her death. Our reading for November will be an excerpt from her last book\, The Book of Hope: A Survival Guide for Trying Times\, in which she draws an interesting contrast between “hope” and “optimism.”

SUMMARY:Photography as Advocacy Part II
DESCRIPTION:We had such a good discussion as we analyzed the wildlife photographs in our Fall 2025 Book Club session on “Photography as Advocacy” that we didn’t have time to look at sanctuary photography in the same detail. \nFor the January BBC\, we will take a close look at sanctuary photographs\, including a selection from OMI\, and we’ll talk about aspects of photography that are especially important for representing our residents and the realities of sanctuary work to the public. Photography is a visual language\, and we’ll talk about how it works to communicate meaning across a range of advocacy platforms.

SUMMARY:[UPDATED] Animals in Literature and Visual Art
DESCRIPTION:In March\, we’ll explore a BBC Reader centered on visual art and short literary segments created across time and place by artists and authors who portray animals in their work to raise environmental and ethical questions related to animal rights. \nAlongside a range of visual artworks\, we’ll read excerpts from older texts\, including The Animal’s Lawsuit Against Humanity\, a 10th-century Muslim Sufi work from Iraq\, as well as short selections from a long poem written just over 1\,000 years ago by the Syrian philosopher Abu al-Ala al-Maʿarri\, often cited as the earliest known explicitly vegan text. \nBBC members are warmly invited to send further suggestions for this session to Sharon at sharon@oddmaninn.org.

SUMMARY:Animal Farm Meets Charlotte’s Web
DESCRIPTION:April will be “Putting the Book in Book Club” month! We’ll discuss two very famous and different novels using pigs as key characters\, and both of our selections are still taught (and sometimes censored) in schools around the U.S. and also widely read by people of all ages: Animal Farm (George Orwell\, 1945) and Charlotte’s Web (E.B. White\, 1952). \nAnimal Farm is a dystopian satire that can be quite grim\, in which Orwell uses animals symbolically to talk about human politics. There is much to talk about regarding the ways that pigs are used symbolically in that widely read allegory about human troubles. Charlotte’s Web is written in a completely different key but with similar things we can discuss about how famous portrayals of pigs in literature shape public perceptions of pigs (and humans) in the world. \nYou are invited to read both novels before the March meeting\, but we know how crunched for time you may be\, so we will also put together a BBC Reader for the meeting with chapter segments from each.

SUMMARY:Artificial Selection and the Joy of Paradigm Shifting
DESCRIPTION:This month’s BBC will explore ways to use scientific topics in advocacy through a visual example: Artificial Selection via the power of graphics! We’ll have some examples of graphics and charts which convey science-based ideas in a way that can help the public shift its thinking in ways that matter. \nWe’ll briefly introduce a version of Thomas Kuhn’s famous concept of “paradigm shift” as it applies not only to science but also to social advocacy. Our BBC Reader for this month will be of interest to anyone in Book Club. No previous experience with these concepts is required! \n___________ \nMeeting Details:\nWhen: Tuesday\, October 27\, 2026 · 6:00–7:00 pm CT (4:00–5:00 pm PT) \nVideo (Google Meet) Link: https://meet.google.com/sxg-bbyk-kaz \n___________ \nThis Month’s Reader:\nOctober 2026 Bite-Size Book Club Reader \n___________ \nQuestions about this session or the book club? SUMMARY:Trophic Levels and More on Paradigm Shifts
DESCRIPTION:This month we’ll dive a bit deeper into the concept of “paradigm shift” as we look at another set of graphics related to trophic levels. We will discuss the ways that better knowledge about trophic levels can become a powerful advocacy resource for individuals and organizations. \nHow can understanding science-based concepts help us collectively educate the public and move the dial? We’ll talk about some of the challenges in our current cultural moment in the U.S. when it comes to science-based public advocacy. This session will build on our October meeting\, but new participants are warmly welcome! \n___________ \nMeeting Details:\nWhen: Tuesday\, November 17\, 2026 · 6:00–7:00 pm CT (4:00–5:00 pm PT) \nVideo (Google Meet) Link: https://meet.google.com/jzw-rmrm-nix \n____________ \nQuestions about this session or the book club? SUMMARY:Remarkably Bright Creatures: A Movie Discussion
DESCRIPTION:Fall Movie! (And the novel\, if you have time!)\nFor December\, we will discuss the movie Remarkably Bright Creatures\, a film adaptation of the novel of the same name by Shelby Van Pelt. This Netflix movie offers us a chance to talk about why certain films about human-animal relationships draw large audiences and ways that scientific ideas are used in combination with fictional storyworlds. \nThis movie invites us to explore the ethics of confining fellow animals for human entertainment or education in zoos and aquariums.* We’ll also discuss the natural world of the octopus! \n___________ \nMeeting Details:\nWhen: Tuesday\, December 15\, 2026 · 6:00–7:00 pm CT (4:00–5:00 pm PT) \nVideo (Google Meet) Link: https://meet.google.com/bha-yotr-kyu \n____________ \nQuestions about this session or the book club? Email Sharon at sharon@oddmaninn.org. \n  \n* Our fellow animals’ lives belong to them\, not to us. Odd Man Inn explicitly rejects keeping wild animals captive for human entertainment\, even when justified as education. This is distinct from providing sanctuary to rescued farmed animals who depend on human care\, where their needs\, autonomy\, and well-being come first.
