Jack was one of the eight pigs who came to OMI when another sanctuary downsized their operations in 2022.
Jack was found roaming through a bean field in Iowa…very likely an escaped pig from a factory farm. He was a huge, gentle Yorkshire with a devilish grin and a passion for the swamp. Jack was one of our most challenging residents for sunscreen application in the warmer months, an essential part of caring for pink pigs. The rates of skin cancer are extremely high, so we endured his growling and diligently applied his sunscreen every day. Caregivers laughed daily at Jack’s dinosaur impersonation as he roared at us, but it was really all just for show!
It is an honor to love them for however long we’re given. It’s never enough—but it’s always an honor. We walked Jack home, keeping the promise we made when he first came into our care. When his body could no longer carry him comfortably, love meant letting him go.
These gentle beings change everything. Jack taught us devotion, presence, and what it truly means to stay—until the very end.
Jack will be greatly missed by his caregivers and his many friends in the Northwest Neighborhood, including Marge, Tulip and Betsy.
