Teddy was one of the Memphis Clan. He was part of the second litter Momma Memphis had on the property in May 2019. There were seven babies, and Teddy was one of them.
The Ferals are the hardest pigs to manage, because they’re very close to their wild ancestors–some of them ARE former wild pigs! Teddy somehow hurt his leg, and he instinctively knew to get low…find shade…don’t make a sound. It’s how prey animals survive. Their intelligence is truly something admirable, but this also makes helping them receive emergent healthcare very challenging.
Teddy was carried out of the holler with kindness and compassion so he could be transported to see the doctors. Teddy accidentally broke his leg in a terrible fashion just living his normal life. Sadly, the injury was not fixable and our only option was to help ease his pain.
Ferals are equal parts fierce and beautiful. We were lucky to have known Teddy, who showed us how pigs were truly meant to live their natural lives. He will be greatly missed by his whole family in the Feral Neighborhood, including his parents, King and Momma Memphis.
