With a dark brown thick coat, some light brown frosting at the tips of her head hair, a long powerful snout and warm brown eyes, Lulabelle is a mysterious beauty. Lovingly dubbed “The Cave Pig,” Lulabelle enjoys her own found and created home for one in a small cave located deep in the holler. The epitome of pig glamping, Lula’s cave overlooks the beautiful forest scenery while providing perfect shelter from the elements, keeping her warm and dry in the winter and cool in the summer. Lula doesn’t limit herself to sleeping in her cave during the day, but rather has a few choice spots in the holler where she likes to create daybeds during the warmer months. She gets her daily exercise by hiking to the Old Guys neighborhood for meals and the occasional quick swamp. Despite Lula’s choice to live off-grid, she still receives all the amenities of Sanctuary Babe living.

Caregivers hike to her cave to provide extra bedding and turn down treats during colder periods, and they assess Lula regularly as they do the rest of the residents. Lula also underwent a routine spay surgery in 2023. Because feral and feral-mix pigs tend to have longer lifespans than their genetically manipulated counterparts, Lula was an excellent candidate for this crucial preventive surgery despite her age of about ten years at the time. Our skilled vet partners were able to successfully remove Lula’s cystic and mass-filled uterus, a common issue in mature female pigs. This is part of the reason why spays are essential components of preventive reproductive healthcare and the standard of care for all female pigs.
