The day we met Esmeralda was supposed to be her euthanasia day. Her person was having some struggles and could no longer provide care. We secured her surrender and gave Esmeralda another four YEARS of great quality life. She had interesting friends and warm shelters. She experienced safety and security and companionship and regular healthcare. She had her old lady feet lovingly tended. She had minerals and salt licks and good quality hay. She knew love.
Esmeralda had a pretty significant tumor in her udder that couldn’t be treated or fixed, which had been bothersome for her. She had been losing weight. The combination of age and frailty was complicated by her very hard life as a breeder before we found her. She had been struggling with her mobility more and more, and we were assisting her quietly. We had to lift her multiple times a day after finding her stuck. Her little legs were just tired.
She knew peace for several years with us…and we gave her a final gift of a peaceful passing. She got a kiss goodbye as she took her final breath.
