Join us monthly, in small groups of 10-ish participants, as we explore captivating works that deepen our understanding of animals, ethics, and our shared world.

For January, in honor of Veganuary, we’ll take a cross-cultural look at the history of veganism and vegetarianism in the United Kingdom, where the Veganuary project took root!

Our Book Club session for January will start with a short little slideshow of famous vegans/vegetarians “across the centuries,” who hailed from Ireland, England, Scotland, and Wales. Then we’ll look at the UK-based Veganuary website (https://veganuary.com/) as a work of public humanities. Together, we will see how they have framed that project for websites in various countries worldwide.

Our reading for January will be an interesting article tracing the history of the emergence of the vegan movement from British vegetarian activism in the early 20th century. The article also covers some key differences between these movements, which will be interesting to discuss!
