Meet Maize!

Maize

Age: Unknown

Sex: Male

Neighborhood:

Maize was found with her flock mates wandering as strays in a neighborhood park in Vancouver, Washington. OMI took in the entire flock years ago, and Maize is our last remaining hen. In many cases, hens are discarded when their reproductive system ages and they start to produce less eggs. They’re called “spent” layers. Just like with any species, including humans, our lives are not over when our reproductive ability starts to decline. We’ve been happy to help Maize live out her natural life as a Sanctuary Babe here in safety.

We do not have many birds because of the intensity of taking over 159 pigs in 2021 in Tennessee. While we provide the best lives we can for our remaining feathered friends, we are currently closed to any new bird intakes.
