Pheebee is a beautiful Devon mix and was one of the 159 pigs surrendered to OMI when we moved to Tennessee and took over the herd in 2021. She was found as a stray in the local community, which is often very dangerous for pigs of any size or breed. When stray animals are reported to the authorities, the options are often very grim for them in rural parts of the country. Agricultural communities see animals like Pheebee as commodities, and it is rare that someone would want to protect her life. The common thread in the rescue of ANY animal, including humans, is that someone chooses to show compassion for the struggles of another being. In Pheebee’s case, she was shown compassion, and she now lives a full and happy life here with an entire family of rescued pig friends.
Pheebee was one of the many females we had spayed on arrival to Tennessee, and her long term health is greatly improved because of it. Spaying females is an essential part of pig healthcare because of the very well-documented tendency for them to have painful and dangerous uterine abnormalities when left unaltered.
