Ruby is an elderly female, and one of the 159 pigs surrendered to OMI when we moved to Tennessee and assumed guardianship of the herd in 2021. Ruby is an independent lady who knows what she likes and how and when she likes it. Fully aware that her human caregivers have a job to do, Ruby has input on how they do it, especially when it comes to wellness routines that involve her participation. Respecting Ruby’s wishes regarding preventive skin care and medication sandwiches is not just part of the crew’s job, but also our philosophy of care to meet each individual resident’s needs.

Ruby is the sole survivor of the biological family that was originally rescued with her: Rufus, Reta, Rebecca and Rhonda were all Ruby’s siblings and sadly passed after our move to this property. Each of the siblings suffered from debilitating arthritis, a condition that commonly plagues animals who are genetically manipulated to grow abnormally large within a short time span. While Ruby does suffer from arthritis, daily medication helps to keep her sassy spirit high.
