We received an email asking for help with vet care for Janice. The email stated “I can’t get the vet to come out or call me back, and she’s had a really bad limp for a long time now”. She was specifically looking for help with that ONE pig, but we dug into the story a little with an old fashioned phone call, and there were two other pigs on the property. Camilla was Janice’s sister, so it was easy to advocate for taking her along. Scooter was meant to be the “breeding boar” for Janice and Camilla, and we didn’t want to leave him behind. The hope in rescue is that if you can clear someone out of all the pigs on the property they will reconsider having pigs at all.
These three “Muppets” were living at a place in rural Tennessee that prides itself on living off the land. They also breed and sell animals as a way to make money for their family. If we had left Camilla and Scooter behind, their fate would have been to stay trapped in the world of exploitation of lives for profit. We simply asked if they would surrender all THREE pigs, and they thankfully agreed.
Even though we were initially only contacted to take Janice to help her get vet care, which turned out to be a very serious break in her elbow, we were able to secure the surrender of her pig partners to come into rescue with her. Janice’s limp saved her whole pig family! Janice’s elbow replacement surgery is scheduled for December 1st, and you can contribute towards her medical expenses on the “GoFundMuppet” page.
