Blynken was part of a sibling group of three that were part of the 159 pigs surrendered to OMI when we took over the property in Tennessee, and it was easy to tell they were a bonded trio. Wynken, Blynken and Nod were like the older version of the Pantalones!
Blynken was the blonde girl, and she had one of the prettiest speckled patterns you’ve ever seen, including on her snout!
She had been struggling with mobility issues for awhile and we were concerned there wouldn’t be a solution. Large pigs like Blynken often have much shorter lifespans because of the tremendous strain their size places on delicate joints and ligaments. When we’ve exhausted every tool available to help a resident maintain a good quality of life, there is only one humane choice left. Blynken was peacefully euthanized by our veterinary team at the University of Tennessee.
Blynken spent most of her life here alongside her two siblings and a large adopted family of rescued pigs. She was a beloved and respected member of the Cabin House Neighborhood. Every need was met throughout her years with us, including being spayed four years ago as part of our initiative to improve the health of the Tennessee herd. We watched her transform into a vibrant, healthy Sanctuary Babe, and it was an honor to help her age with dignity and comfort.
While we always grieve the loss of a resident, we choose to celebrate Blynken’s life. She was a vulnerable farmed animal who escaped the gauntlet of animal agriculture and found her way to safety with her siblings. Few pigs are given the chance to grow old with their family, surrounded by love and care. We feel immense gratitude for the privilege of serving this mission in a part of the country where sanctuary remains so deeply needed.
